Can something as simple as a basket change a life?

We’re answering that question in tandem with the publication of the Artisan Alliance’s case study series, Stories from the Creative Economy: Making the Case for Refugee Artisan Enterprise.

The Artisan Alliance, an initiative of the Aspen Global Innovators Group at the Aspen Institute, is committed to supporting and strengthening artisan enterprises around the world.

This year, Indego Africa partnered with the Artisan Alliance on their journey to learn more about the social and economic impact artisan work has on refugees across the globe.

Over 70.8 million people around the world have been displaced from their homes. That’s equivalent to 1 in every 110 people in the world --- the highest level of displacement on record.

After fleeing war or persecution, the opportunity to earn a living is one of the most effective ways people can rebuild their lives with dignity. Artisan work can empower refugees to build strong social and economic ties with their host communities and strengthen their capacity to claim their rights.

Since 2016, Indego Africa’s Economic Inclusion for Refugees program has provided artisan skills, business education, and market access to 150 female refugees and counting.
